A startup in San Antonio is at work on its first tiny home project here in the Alamo City, and its aiming to spread its brand of modern design across the entire city.

Rising Barn, headquartered in the San Antonio Entrepreneur Center, celebrated a groundbreaking last week for its first unit in San Antonio in Dignowity Hill, located on the East Side. Pegy Brimhall, the company’s CEO, said the home will be 1,519 square feet on a lot with dimensions that are 41 feet by 120 feet. The lot spans a mere 0.1 acres at 1008 Dawson, according to the San Antonio Business Journal.

Brimhall told the Journal that after a two-week waiting period following the pouring of the concrete, it should only take about eight-to-12 weeks to finish the assembly of the home on the grounds.

They altered their product to fit in with the Dignowity Hill historical imagery, Brimhall said.

The tiny homes generally come DIY at a rate of $75 per square foot, but those who don’t want to put the home together themselves can spend as much as $200 per square foot for a turn-key service, meaning the home will be assembled for the occupants, Brimhall said.

The tiny homes from Rising Barn typically consist of three pieces: The Pad, the Pod and the Box.

The Pad is the primary living structure, with the one in Dignowity Hill is 800 square feet.

Meanwhile, the Pod, affectionately nicknamed the “Domo,” is an accessory dwelling unit, ADU, that can serve as additional guest suites, at-home offices, storage spaces and more.

The Box is used as a garage, Brimhall said.

Rising also are constructing special head jamb sills that create window boxes that will protect the windows and doors from weather, sun and more, Brimhall said. She also said the structures are watertight and airtight.
